Marcia Lou Smith

Marcia “Lou” Smith, 84, of Palmer, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 26, 1938, the daughter of Guy Ballard and Virginia Dowdy. Marcia married Robert “Bob” Smith on December 6, 1958 at Free Methodist Church in Taylorville, IL.

Lou worked for 37 years at Taylorville St. Vincent’s Memorial Hospital where she was a CNA on the acute care and skilled nursing units. She took pride in taking great care of her patients. Lou was a loving wife to Bob Smith for 55 years. Although they had no children of their own, they had a hand in raising many in their family.  Jenny Huddleston Foster was Lou’s niece but more like a daughter. Lou’s “grandchildren” were the light of her life. She enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to Christian speakers, and going to church while she was able. Lou looked forward to meeting with a group of her local friends for coffee on Wednesday mornings. She was a great seamstress and a wonderful cook. Lou enjoyed visiting with family while drinking sweet tea on the porch. She also enjoyed working puzzles in her spare time with her niece, Amy Postin. Lou will be remembered for her large and outgoing personality, which was a joy to so many.

She is survived by her Niece: Jenny (Chad) Huddleston Foster of Palmer, IL; Grandchildren: Seth Foster; Gabrielle Foster and Sophia Foster; Siblings: Marlene Dunn of Blue Mound, IL; David (Marcella) Ballard of Tovey, IL; and Marie Crowder of Palm Coast, FL, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her Husband: Robert E. Smith; her Father: Guy Ballard; her Mother: Virginia Dowdy; two sisters: Barbara Stafford and Patricia Huddleston; and her Niece: Laura “Missy” Huddleston.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Chad Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Anderson Cemetery. Family welcomes friends to a dinner following at the Palmer Community Building.
