Gary Allen Emerson, 61 of Moweaqua, formerly of Taylorville, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 6:26 p.m. at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL. He was born on November 10, 1959 in Taylorville, IL the son of Ralph Elmo and Viola Augusta (Pfeifer) Emerson.
Gary grew up on family farms near Blue Mound and Stonington, Illinois and attended schools in both Stonington and Taylorville. He later resided at the John Street Group Home and was part of the John Street family for many years. After his health declined, he resided at the Moweaqua Nursing Retirement Home in Moweaqua. Gary worked at the activity center in Taylorville. He loved watching Dukes of Hazard, The Munsters and receiving John Deere items as gifts. He had a sense of humor and always loved a good prank.
He is survived by his older brothers Richard (Gail) Emerson of Perry, IL and Dale Emerson of Moweaqua Illinois, three nieces, Brenda DeSpain of Griggsville, Beth (Rick) Fencik of Chambersburg, and Barbara (Rick) Webel of Mt. Sterling, as well as 10 great-nieces and nephews, and 13 great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a great-niece, Ashley Marie Fencik.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with funeral beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Gerald McPhillips is officiating. Burial will be in Old Stonington Cemetery near Stonington, IL.
Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
